Our story starts in Mesa AZ when our daughter was just 2 years old. We started to notice that she liked to play alone, and that she didn’t talk very much. We have a Dr. of child psychology in the family who understood our concerns and came right over. As she played with our child, she assured us how normal She was and that in fact, She was brilliant. “Edison” was brilliant but didn’t speak till he was 4, She will be fine and when she talks, be prepared for sentences.” We believed her, so we waited till She was 4 and still was not speaking to seek a second opinion. This opinion came in the form of preschool teachers and school psychologists. We took her in for an IEP (A challenged child’s game plan for what is wrong with them and how the school and it’s programs can and will help) and finally were faced with the harsh reality that she had some severe problems. Allot of her problems are speech related. When the school psychologist told me that she might have Autism, my mind felt like it was swimming and I was drowning. We finished discussing what it was they felt she needed, and what they could do to help, but I was already numb. I smiled, and shook my head where it was appropriate, signed on the dotted line to get her into school. I (to be continued...)
